Single Of The Week

Author: Brett Foley

All Torn Down
The Living End
(Modular)

Most impressive about this new offering from the Living End is the competent song structure and Chris Cheney’s ability, through intelligent guitar playing, to make the Melbourne three-piece sound like a four-piece. The thumping rhythm of Scott Owens’s upright bass allows Cheney’s raw, staccato chords to float above it. The single has an early-’80s, London feel, the subject matter (urbanisation, development and alienation) reflecting TLE’s diverse influences. The band’s set- up and recording methods are raw and simple, without the multi- layered over-production evident on many releases. Songwriting credit is shared.
